It's getting a lot of talk about Sonic Boom , the new installment in the adventures of the character originated as Sega's mascot and sentenced to a torturous fate. In an interview with the Guardian , some of the authors have revealed a series of revelations that give us an already relatively clear of what we can expect from the new game, intended exclusively for Wii U and 3DS.
First of all, the characters and the game world had a redesign rather importantly, as you can see from the first pictures. The intention is to update, for the umpteenth time, the brand. Question that may have important effects: David Corless, Sonic brand director, likened the project to the Sonic Boom alternate versions of popular comics produced by Marvel and DC. The four protagonists are well known, and certainly Dr. Robotnik will return to assume the role of "bad guy", but it is quite likely that a new opponent appears. The choices in terms of design and storyline made for the game, then, will find themselves in the CG series compiled by French OuiDo: the realization of the two products, in fact, took place at the same time, and often the decisions taken by the ' one they are going to affect the other. To complete the project, and accompanying video game series, comes a line of action figures produced by the "usual" Tomy.
Apparently, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992) and Sonic Adventure (1998) were the two adventures, most of the others, have inspired the new episode, not to mention the most recent, and surprisingly successful, Sonic Generations:
"Sonic 2 placed the emphasis on the concept of 'team' through the use of Sonic and Tails" explains Bob Rephaim, creative director of Big Red Button "and we wanted to take up this issue with the inclusion of Amy and Knuckles. The structure of Sonic Adventure, however, offered exploration and discovery that is widened as the player continued. These were, in our opinion, excellent approaches, and we put them at the base of the Sonic Boom. We also enjoyed the things done by Sonic Team Sonic Generations, which gave him the opportunity to play both 2D and 3D variations of the same levels. For this reason, we wanted to integrate 2D and 3D seamlessly within the same levels in a rational way, trying to keep things interesting. "
The foundations of Sonic Boom are those of the platform / adventure 3D with a strong emphasis on co-op: Sonic will use the weapon's speed, Knuckles will have a great physical strength (the new design it reveals very discreetly), Tails will use of gadgets and Amy his big hammer. All this will translate certainly (also) in environmental puzzles to be solved by combining the various skills of the group, but Rephaim would like to emphasize the desire not to fall into the traps of the typical co-op, avoiding, for example, forced slowdowns in the pace of the game. In view of the co-op will also include the mechanics of the so-called "energy beam", a force that binds together two characters and can be exploited as a sling, for instance to launch away one of the two. The longtime fans will recall the use of a similar device in Knuckles Chaotix on Sega 32X (and nell'abortito Sonic Crackers).
All that remains out of the projects even the use of the special features of Wii U and 3DS: The Wii U gamepad, for example, will be used not only as a "scanner" that can reveal the location of hidden objects, but - that's incredible - the local co-op. "We tried a whole host of other solutions to the local co-op," says Rephaim "including split-screen, but none has proved satisfactory."
